Abstract

Studies of interreligious tasāmuh in Indonesia have predominantly focused on structural and institutional dimensions, including state policies, majority-minority relations, and the role of religious organizations. Meanwhile, the everyday communicative processes through which tasāmuh is constructed, negotiated, and sustained within local communities remain insufficiently explored. This study aims to analyze tasāmuh as an Islamic ethical framework for interreligious coexistence through communicative action within multireligious community of Plajan Village. Employing an interdisciplinary qualitative approach, this study was conducted through field research in Plajan Village, Jepara, a multireligious village officially recognized as both a Pancasila Village and a Religious Tolerance Village. Data were collected through participant observation, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that tasāmuh in Plajan Village is not emerge as a passive social condition but is continuously produced through five interconnected communicative practices grounded in Islamic ethics. Dialogical communication fosters ta‘āruf (mutual understanding and familiarity), deliberation promotes ta‘āyush (peaceful coexistence), social consensus generates ta‘āwun (cooperation), non-dominating communication reflects ‘adl (justice), and the public sphere fosters rahmah (care and social empathy). These findings demonstrate that communicative action not only fosters rational mutual understanding but also cultivates the ethical dimension of tasāmuh that sustain multireligious coexistence. The contribution of this study lies in conceptualizing tasāmuh as an Islamic ethical framework that extends beyond conceptual level and is concretely manifested communicative processes in everyday multireligious life.
